3 Fun Ways to Save Money This Summer

I love summer, and it's not just because I was born and raised on a Caribbean island.

The busy pace of the school year begins to slow down. The days get longer, the weather gets warmer, and families have more opportunities to spend time together creating memories.

But if we're not careful, our desire to create those memories can become expensive.

Between summer camps, vacations, eating out, and weekend activities, summer spending can quickly get out of control.

The good news?

Having a great summer doesn't have to mean spending a lot of money.

Here are three fun ways to enjoy the season while keeping more money in your pocket.

1. Visit Your Local Library

When most people think of the library, they think of books.

But your local library is so much more than that.

Many libraries offer:

  • Video games to borrow

  • STEM kits for children

  • Movie rentals

  • Community events

  • Discounted admission to local attractions

  • Free or reduced-price museum passes

Some libraries even host summer programs for children and families throughout the season.

So don't sleep on your local library.

Stop by and talk to your librarian. They are often a wealth of information and can help you discover resources you didn't even know existed.

2. Check Out Your Local Town Events

Yes, your town website can save you money.

Many towns and surrounding communities host:

  • Summer concerts

  • Outdoor movie nights

  • Family festivals

  • Park activities

  • Community celebrations

Best of all, many of these events are completely free.

Just one word of warning: there always seems to be an ice cream truck nearby.

So even though the event may be free, you may want to bring a little spending money for a cold treat on a hot day.

3. Take Advantage of Community Centers

Community centers are another hidden gem.

Many offer:

  • Summer camps

  • Sports programs

  • Family events

  • Swimming opportunities

  • Educational activities

And if cost is a concern, don't automatically assume you can't afford it.

Many organizations offer:

  • Scholarships

  • Sliding-scale fees

  • Financial assistance programs

Always ask questions before crossing an opportunity off your list.

You may be surprised by what is available.

The Money Lesson

One of the biggest misconceptions about enjoying life is believing that fun has to be expensive.

It doesn't.

Some of the best memories come from simple experiences, shared time, and being intentional about how you spend your money.

As my mom always says:

"There is not a lack of resources; there is a lack of resourcefulness."

So don't let a tight budget stop you from having a wonderful summer.

A little creativity can go a long way.

Have a great summer and keep your money Irie.
