You Can't Always See Someone's Financial Reality

Recently, I went on vacation to an all-inclusive resort in the Caribbean.

I had an amazing time and got some rest that, apparently, I desperately needed. 😂

But somewhere between lying by the pool with my book, people-watching, and talking with my new vacation friends, I found myself thinking about something I've noticed before:

We make a lot of assumptions about people based on what we can see.

And money may be one of the biggest areas where we get it wrong.

You Came on the Big Ship

Years ago, before my husband and I had children, we went on a cruise.

And let me tell you—we did not have money like that.

We used a credit card for the trip.

During one of our excursions, I started talking with our tour guide and asked her about places the locals went. She kept suggesting tourist attractions, and eventually I told her:

“That's too expensive.”

She looked at me, surprised, and essentially said:

“That shouldn't be a problem. You have money. You came on the big ship.”

I will never forget that.

I explained to her that being on that ship didn't mean we were wealthy. Some people saved for months to afford vacations like that. Others, like us at the time, used credit.

She was genuinely surprised.

Her response was basically:

“You guys are like us.”

That conversation stayed with me.

What We See Isn't Always the Full Story

Years later, sitting at this beautiful resort, I found myself thinking about it again.

I spoke with guests who had saved and sacrificed to make the vacation happen. Some told me they had stretched themselves financially. Others had used credit cards.

At the same time, I talked with hardworking resort employees who appreciated the tips they received because that additional money mattered to them.

And there we all were in the same beautiful place, looking at one another from completely different perspectives.

One person may see a guest at an expensive resort and think:

They have money.

But that person may have saved for two years to be there.

They may have put the entire trip on a credit card.

Or they may genuinely be wealthy.

You simply don't know.

And isn't that true outside of vacation too?

We see the house.

The car.

The clothes.

The vacations.

The restaurants.

And we create a financial story about someone based on what is visible.

But we don't see their bank account.

We don't see their debt.

We don't see what they sacrificed.

We don't see how long they saved.

And we certainly don't see what happens when they go home.

Wealth Isn't Always Visible

This is one reason I've become increasingly careful about comparing my financial life to someone else's.

We're usually comparing what we know about our finances to what we can see of theirs.

Those aren't the same thing.

Someone else's lifestyle isn't proof of their financial position.

And your lifestyle isn't required to prove yours.

That vacation reminded me that there can be an enormous difference between looking like you have money and actually having financial security.

So enjoy the vacation.

Tip the people who take good care of you.

Enjoy the beautiful things you've worked and saved for.

But don't look around and assume everyone else has more than you do.

You may only be seeing their big ship.

You have no idea what it took for them to get on it.
