You Can't Build Wealth Without Keeping a Portion of What You Earn

If you asked most people whether they want to build wealth or become financially secure, I think the answer would be yes.
Very few people set out hoping to struggle financially.
Yet building wealth often feels out of reach.
Over the years, through my own financial journey and by learning from others, I've come to believe there is one principle that sits at the foundation of wealth building:
You have to keep a portion of what you earn.
There is simply no way around it.
It doesn't matter how much money you make if every dollar leaves your hands.
Before you can invest...Before you can build wealth...Before you can create financial freedom...
You first have to develop the discipline of living on less than you earn.
A Lesson That Changed My Perspective
I grew up in church, where I was taught from a young age about tithing.
Giving back to God became a discipline that has remained part of my life.
But one day a thought struck me.
If I can faithfully set aside a portion of my income for God, why wasn't I faithfully setting aside a portion for my own future?
Why wasn't I filling my own storehouse?
After all, life is unpredictable.
Cars break down.
Jobs change.
Medical emergencies happen.
Unexpected opportunities come along.
I realized that saving wasn't just about money.
It was about preparing for whatever life might bring.
So I made a commitment to myself.
I would keep 10% of everything I brought home.
The Real Reward Wasn't the Money
At first, I noticed my savings account growing.
But something else was growing too.
My peace.
Knowing I had money set aside changed how I responded to life's uncertainties.
Instead of immediately going into panic mode every time something unexpected happened, I could pause.
I could think.
I could evaluate my options and make decisions based on what was best for my family—not simply what my bank account forced me to do.
That peace is difficult to explain until you've experienced it yourself.
Every Decision Has a Trade-Off
Of course, saving wasn't always easy.
Keeping 10% meant saying no sometimes.
It meant delaying purchases.
It meant declining invitations.
It meant finding less expensive ways to enjoy life.
There were things I wanted.
But I wanted what was waiting for me on the other side of saving even more.
Because every dollar I kept wasn't just money.
It was another brick in the financial foundation I was trying to build.
Final Thought
If you want to begin building wealth, start by keeping a portion of what you earn.
It doesn't have to be 10%.
Start with what you can.
The important thing is to build the habit.
Because wealth isn't built by earning alone.
It's built by learning to keep, protect, and grow a portion of what you've worked so hard to earn.
Keep your money Irie.
